The 2013 Juno Awards are on April 21, which is still quite a ways away, but I’ve been keeping an eye on the performers and the nominees. This is good news for you because it means that you don’t have to. So far, the performers that have been announced are Carly Rae Jepsen, which is unfortunate, Billy Talent, which is also kind of unfortunate, Mariana’s Trench, and Michael Buble, which is by far the most exciting yet. A couple years ago, Arcade Fire performed. All I can say is it’s going to be hard to top that, Carly Rae Jepsen.
The nominees are very diverse. As it turns out, there are a lot of categories at the Junos, such as Vocal Jazz Album of the Year and Children’s Album of the Year. I’m not going to lie, there are a lot of categories and musicians I don’t care so much about. But there are also a few surprising nominees and honestly, most of them are in the songwriting category. The nominees for Songwriter of the Year are Afie Jurvanen (Bahamas), the Arkells, Kathleen Edwards, Hannah Georgas, and Leonard Cohen. That sounds about right. Bahamas and Kathleen Edwards, as well as The Barr Brothers, are also up for Adult Alternative Album of the Year, which is cool.
In case you don’t know who any of these people are:
Bahamas – Caught Me Thinking
Arkells – Kiss Cam
Kathleen Edwards – Change the Sheets
Hannah Georgas – Elephant
The Barr Brothers – Beggar in the Morning
