The men of Star Trek: A lot of eyebrow and a Paradise Lost complex

On the weekend Hilary, Jess and I went to see Star Trek: Into Darkness. Apart from  having a really vague title, it was really, incredibly good. I don’t know if I’m just a massive nerd, but I liked how much Spock screen-time there was, and I liked how Benedict Cumberbatch essentially dominated the film with his awesomeness. Even before you could see him you could hear his deep voice, and we all had quite the Paradise Lost sort of complex going on, where you find yourself rooting for the bad guy for so long because he’s so intriguing, so interesting, so puzzling, and so outrageously handsome. Observe:

In character: babe.

On the red carpet: babe.

Chris Pine, also known as Captain Kirk, the resident heartthrob (right William Shatner?)

In character: you can’t deny, he’s adorable, probably because he looks impossibly young here.

On the red carpet: So handsome, am I right? He might have the largest eyebrows since the dad from the O.C., but it totally works.

And then we have Zachary Quinto as Spock.

In character: the bangs and the ears do him no favours, though he does actually look quite a bit like Leonard Nemoy. I think we’re all thankful Pine does not look like William Shatner.

On the red carpet: Yes, he has a totally hipster haircut (and often glasses), large eyebrows which somebody keeps trying to wax (look at them here – they’re gorgeous – not a stray in sight), and he has this sort of Doberman-Liev Schrieber thing going on. And yet, I dig it.

If you haven’t seen Star Trek yet, and this hasn’t convinced you, I’m not surprised. But I will say, you should see it. Really. It’s an incredibly action film with the most compelling villain I’ve seen in a blockbuster movie in a long time. You’ll thank me for it later.

  1. Apparently there was a scene with Benedict Cumberbatch in the shower that ended up on the cutting room floor –
